In this lecture, Prof Charles Webster offers a detailed analysis of the health care provisions in Britain before and immediately after the introduction of the National Health Service, discussing amongst others the degree to which the state was already a primary care provider in 1929 and the difficulties of translating various visions for state healthcare into reality
